Exclusive (VIDEO): The Secrets of Lily Van der Woodsen’s Chignon

We die. We just die! On Thursday night we got to meet one of our hair idols in person at the pre-Mother’s Day cocktail party  at the Tassimo Brewbot Café in Soho NYC. Yes, the idol was none other than Kelly Rutherford (i.e. Gossip Girl’s gorgeous Upper East Side mom Lily Van der Woodsen Bass Humphrey).

You guys know how obsessed we are with Gossip Girl here at L&M, and you also how much we love chignons. Imagine how elated we were to be able to ask Kelly in person about Lily’s go-to chignon!

Kelly told L&M’s Creative Director, Jackie Cascarano, that Lily’s chignon evolved out of practicality not necessarily love of the up-do.

“The first season I was wearing it down a lot and then I started wearing it up and it was just so easy to maintain,” Kelly told us. Continue Reading »

Gossip Girl: Where Has The Good Hair Gone?

We here at Lock & Mane absolutely adore Gossip Girl. Seriously. It’s almost unhealthy how much we look forward to Monday evenings. And our love for Blair and Serena’s bitchy/slutty (respectively) antics knoweth no bounds. The fashion is always stellar, the writing witty and people pretty. But we’ve been noticing something this season, kittens. The hair sucks! Are we right or are we right?

Back in Season 1 Miss Blair wore lots of colorful accessories accented by shiny soft curls and Serena had covetable voluminous blonde bombshell tresses.  No more, kids. No more.  Now Blair’s drab brown hair is limp and straight with no bounce and no shine and NO HEADBAND (coincidence? we think not). Serena’s ratty locks are constantly in “missionary disarray” (thanks witty GG writers) and always look like they need a good brushing and some dry shampoo. Exhibit A below.

Now compare the hot messes above to the gorgeousness below. B and S in the first few seasons of the greatest show of our time.

Queen B: The bounce, the curls, the bow headband! J’adore.

Blonde blombshell Serena. Remember when she used to brush her hair?

It’s jarring, no? The hair used to be so freaking good. We can only imagine there is a secret hairdresser strike on the Gossip Girl set? Are they refusing to work? We implore you, fabulous hairstylists of seasons past… please come back and work your magic again.

Gossip Girl Is An Extension Free Zone

According to Leighton Meester all that hair whipping around the Gossip Girl set is the real thing.

“No one uses extensions or clip-ins any more, but when we first started we did a lot,” the Herbal Essences Ambassador told In Style UK.

Impressive, right? We really would have thought that Blake Lively’smissionary disarray” mane included some intense faux-locks. But alas, no.

Leighton added that she keeps her own long locks so impossibly shiny by applying a lot of masques in the shower. (So do we! Stars really are just like us!).

Check out Leighton’s full hair exposé below! xoxo

Hallelujah! The Headband Returns.

Happy happy joy joy! Blair Waldorf is wearing a headband!

Our heroine of the headpiece inspired us on a weekly basis during Gossip Girl’s early seasons but since she began college last year her crowning accoutrements have been few and far between.

So we were simply delighted when we spotted Miss Blair sporting a chic purple headband for the majority of last night’s birthday party episode! Brilliant!

B and her headbands are like Samson and his luscious man-locks. Without them she is powerless.

Seriously, think about it: sans headband she has been unlucky in love and inept at university social-climbing. Coincidence? We think not. Our money’s on the headpiece, kids. The headpiece and the new gaggle of accessory-donning minions. All is as it should be on the Upper East Side. xoxo
